ABOUT THE PENDLETON CHRISTKINDLMARKT
Christkindlmarkt Origins and Pendleton History What is a “Christkindlmarkt” in General?
Christkindlmarkt, commonly known as Christmas markets, traces its roots back to late medieval Germany, with the earliest recorded market in Vienna dating to 1298. Originally referred to as Dezembermarkt (December Market), these gatherings offered a venue for purchasing food and goods in preparation for winter and served as a social hub. Over the years, they transformed into festive celebrations, featuring traditional foods, crafts, and decorations.
How Did Pendleton Christkindlmarkt Begin?
The festive outdoor market was founded by local Ginny Gaulin as a way to celebrate and connect back to the Pendleton community during the global pandemic. Over the last five years the event has grown into a unique tradition not to be missed, and now regularly makes news outlets and travel destination lists for Charming Holiday Towns and Hallmark Traditions. Starting in 2025, the Town of Pendleton will take on the role of market manager for the event moving forward.
